🎨 How I Paint. How I Teach

Classical foundations. Intentional practice. Personal expression.

Paint & Practice is built around a simple belief: strong artistic expression begins with understanding.

My approach to oil painting is rooted in realism and classical principles, but the goal is not photographic imitation. Instead, I teach artists to understand what they are seeing—to recognize light and shadow, simplify form, control value and color, and make intentional decisions with every brushstroke.

Technique provides the foundation; personal interpretation is what ultimately gives a painting its voice.

That same philosophy shapes the way I teach. Lessons are designed to explain not only how a technique works, but whyit works. Through video demonstrations, detailed written lessons, guided exercises, and supporting resources, students develop both practical painting skills and the visual understanding needed to make confident decisions at the easel.

The learning process is intentionally slow, structured, and self-paced. There is no pressure to rush through a course or simply complete lessons. Students are encouraged to observe, practice deliberately, revisit concepts, and allow skills to develop through repetition and experience.

Paint & Practice also recognizes that every artist develops differently. The goal is not to teach students to paint exactly as I do, but to give them the knowledge, tools, and confidence to make their own artistic choices eventually. As technical understanding grows, so does the freedom to experiment, interpret, and develop a personal artistic voice.

Courses may continue to grow through additional demonstrations, expanded explanations, and new supporting materials. This allows Paint & Practice to remain a living learning environment—one designed not simply to help you finish a painting, but to help you better understand how to think, see, and work as an artist.

Learn the principles. Practice with intention. Paint with your own voice.

Because the goal isn't to paint like someone else—it's to develop the skills and understanding to paint like you.
